Frank Zappa – 200 Motels
"200 Motels" is the soundtrack album to Frank Zappa's 1971 film of the same name.
The album was released on October 4, 1971 and is characterized by a blend of Avant-garde, Comedy Rock, and Experimental genres, incorporating elements of Rock, Stage & Screen, Dialogue, Blues Rock, Soundtrack, Opera, Score, Psychedelic Rock, Comedy, and Musical. It alternates between rock tracks by the Mothers of Invention and symphonic pieces by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, all composed by Zappa. The music aligns with the film's theme of a rock band's chaotic tour life, including references to the departure of bassist Jeff Simmons.
Contributors to the album included the Mothers of Invention, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Elgar Howarth, and narrator Theodore Bikel. Other musicians like Ruth Underwood, Mark Volman, Howard Kaylan, Aynsley Dunbar, George Duke, Martin Lickert, and Jimmy Carl Black were involved, as well as Ringo Starr and Keith Moon.
"200 Motels" reached No. 59 on the Billboard 200 chart and is generally considered a less central part of Zappa's work by critics. The album has seen several reissues, including CD releases and extended 50th-anniversary editions in 2021 with additional content. Notable tracks range from rock and chamber pop to experimental orchestral pieces and humorous songs, with "Strictly Genteel (The Finale)" becoming a staple in Zappa's live performances.
The original album features 34 tracks. You can find the full track listing in the referenced documents. Note that reissues may contain bonus tracks.
