  • Release and Success: Released on August 31, 1987, "Bad" was Michael Jackson's third solo album on Epic Records. It achieved global success, reaching number one in 24 countries and becoming the best-selling album worldwide in 1987 and 1988. The album is one of the best-selling of all time, with approximately 45 million copies sold globally. It is also the first album to have five consecutive singles reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
  • Production and Sound: Michael Jackson co-produced the album with Quincy Jones, their third and final collaboration. Recording the album took over a year. Jackson incorporated a more assertive sound and experimented with genres including pop, dance, R&B, funk, soul, jazz, rock, and hard rock.
