--------------------------------------------
- About the album: Released on June 22, 1979, Rust Never Sleeps is the tenth studio album by Neil Young and his third with Crazy Horse. The majority of the album consists of live recordings with studio overdubs. The album's title and concept reflect Young's idea of avoiding stagnation in his artistic approach and exploring new ways of live performance during his tour with Crazy Horse.
- Musical Style: The album is divided into acoustic and electric sections. The first five tracks are acoustic, solo performances, while the remaining tracks feature Neil Young and Crazy Horse playing electric songs. Rust Never Sleeps, along with Ragged Glory, is seen as an early influence on grunge music.
- Notable Tracks: The album features two versions of "Hey Hey, My My": an acoustic version titled "My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)" and an electric version titled "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)". "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)" was released as a single and reached No. 79 on the Billboard Hot 100. Other notable tracks include "Powderfinger" and "Thrasher".
- Chart Performance: The album reached No. 8 on the Billboard 200. It was certified Gold by the RIAA.
- Recording: The acoustic tracks were recorded live in San Francisco in May 1978, and the electric tracks were recorded during the tour in October 1978. Studio overdubs were added later, and audience noise was largely removed.
- Availability: Rust Never Sleeps is available on CD, vinyl, and digital formats.
- Critical Reception: The album received positive reviews, with some critics considering it among Young's best work. It was highly ranked in The Village Voice's 1979 Pazz & Jop critics poll and was included in Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
