"Everybody's Rockin'" is the 14th studio album by Neil Young, released on July 27, 1983. It features Neil Young backed by a band made up just for the occasion, called The Shocking Pinks.
Here's more about the album:
  • Genre and Style: This album is a collection of rockabilly songs, including both covers and original material. Some sources also describe the style as Doo Wop.
  • Significance: It's considered a departure from Young's previous album, Trans (1983), which was a synth-heavy electro-rock album. Everybody's Rockin' has a sound reminiscent of early rock & roll, with '50s-style vocal reverb and backing choruses.
  • Album Length: The album is notable for being Young's shortest, with a running time of 25 minutes.
  • Tracklist: The album includes songs like:
    • "Betty Lou's Got a New Pair of Shoes"
    • "Rainin' in My Heart"
    • "Payola Blues"
    • "Wonderin'"
    • "Kinda Fonda Wanda"
    • "Jellyroll Man"
    • "Bright Lights, Big City"
    • "Cry, Cry, Cry"
    • "Mystery Train"
    • "Everybody's Rockin'"
  • Background: Young intentionally explored a different genre with this album, creating a contrast with his earlier and later work. Some songs, like "Wonderin'", were written long before the album sessions. Geffen Records had originally intended to have a more developed concept album with two additional songs that would provide "more depth to The Shocking Pinks," but they cancelled the recording sessions and released the album as it was.
  • Critical Reception: Reviews vary. Some consider it "not 'classic' Neil" but an interesting and fun album. Others appreciate it as background music or a stylistic experiment. Some note the controversy with Geffen Records over the album's unexpected genre shift.
  • Personnel: In addition to Neil Young on vocals, piano, guitar, and harmonica, the album features Ben "King" Keith on alto saxophone and lead guitar, Larry Byrom on piano and backing vocals, Tim Drummond on upright bass, Karl Himmel on snare drum, and Rick Palombi and Anthony Crawford on backing vocals.
